Reminiscent of a European village style complex, Reef Lodge is a funky well laid out property and was built back in the early 1960’s by an Italian family and largely catered to the Stevedore wharf workers that travelled to Townsville for the seasonal work each year. They would leaving behind families and friends for up to 8 months a year to work loading and unloading ships in North Queensland's largest shipping port. These workers travelled from as far south as Melbourne and would stay at what was then called “Carmen House,” named after the daughter of the original owner who built a large portion of the current buildings on the property. Later in the 70’s and early 80’s there was a change and the management moved into a new direction which was the backpacking youth adventure market when it was in its infancy. In the 90’s the property was sold again and was not well looked after and then in 2001 was purchased by the current owners who spent many years refurbishing and making the Reef Lodge what it is today. Well featured in many on-line and printed review books including a high recommendation in “The Lonely Planet”
